Clear Aligners vs. Traditional Braces: Your All-In-One Guide

Traditional braces vs invisible braces: what are the differences, and how can you decide between them? This comprehensive guide will answer all your questions.

Invisible braces and metal braces comparison

Zenyum Invisible Braces vs Metal Braces: How Do I Decide?

Choosing the type of braces treatment you go for is a personal decision depending on the type of lifestyle you have. The only way to make such a commitment is to weigh out the pros and cons of each teeth straightening solution, to see which best suits you.

Here are some factors to help you make a more informed decision:

1. Eligibility

Metal Braces

Invisible Braces/Clear Aligners

  • Applicable to all cases: despite any complexity of the case, metal braces are always an option.
  • At least a 2-year-long commitment
  • Treat most cases from mild to complex.
  • Clear aligners might not be able to fix severely crooked teeth.
  • Compliance for aligner wear time of at least 20-22 hours a day

Bonus: Even if you have problems with teeth grinding, you’ll still be able to wear invisible braces!

2. Price

On a budget? Go with invisible braces.

Advances in 3D scanning and printing technology have greatly brought down the costs of invisible braces. That means you no longer need to wait for that elusive year-end bonus to give yourself your best smile.

But just how affordable is it, you ask? Well, for your reference:
Zenyum Invisible Braces cost just $2,650 (for ZenyumClear™) and S$3,990 to $4,490 (for ZenyumClear™ Plus) – with no hidden costs
Conventional braces in Singapore – cost up to $6,000

3. Comfort

Clear aligners have a smooth surface and are moulded exactly to your teeth and gum line making them more comfortable. Unlike metal braces where your lips and cheeks are exposed to metal and wire, making you easily prone to ulcers.

Just ask anyone who has had metal braces before, and they’ll tell you about the:

  • Sore gums
  • Scrapes or sores on the inside of the cheeks due to the inevitable contact between the metal brackets and cheeks
  • Tongue cuts (from running the tongue across the braces)

4. Convenience

  • Changes to diet

Unlike metal braces that are fixed onto your teeth, clear aligners can be removed before every meal. That’s definitely a plus point for all the foodies that can’t imagine making changes to their diet just for a straighter smile. You can eat whatever you like without having the fear of breaking any braces brackets.

  • Oral Care Routine

Brushing with metal braces can be quite the ritual with all the flossing required. With invisible braces, all you have to do is remove them and brush as you normally would. Once you’re done, pop them back on! Invisible braces give you the level of hygiene you wouldn’t get with metal braces.

5. Aesthetics

Because invisible braces are transparent, they wouldn’t garner too much attention. You can rest assured that you can go for an interview or give that presentation without a brace face if it bothers you.

Go ahead and take your headshots and selfies with friends and your teeth-straightening journey wouldn’t remain a history record.

6. Treatment Journey

In general, you’ll achieve a straighter, more attractive smile faster when you opt for invisible braces. Studies have shown that traditional braces take an average of almost 36 months. On the other hand, our Invisible Braces process takes only 3 to 15 months depending on the amount of teeth movement needed.

3 to 15 months vs 36 months.

The choice is clear! (Pun intended)

FAQs

  • Do either aligners or braces change your face shape?

The answer is neither yes nor no. Clear aligners or braces do not directly change your face shape but do help correct minor jaw misalignments once the teeth have been straightened to the desired position.

  • Does either method require tooth extraction?

When it comes to metal braces, extraction is required to make space for the teeth to shift prior to treatment. While invisible braces uses Interproximal Reduction (IPR) instead. Rest assured that it is a non-invasive procedure that does not damage your teeth and there is no pain!

As for wisdom teeth, most people don’t have to extract them unless they’re causing a problem. If you are suitable for our Zenyum Invisible Braces treatment, you will be invited for an in-person consultation where our expert partner dentist will examine your teeth and advise you further.

  • Can I have aligners or braces for just the upper or lower teeth?

Zenyum Invisible Braces is designed to treat both upper and lower teeth at the same time, because this gives better and more predictable results. If your teeth are crooked on one jaw only, we’ll focus tooth movement on that arch, with just small movements of the teeth of the opposing jaw. While it is possible for metal braces to be done on 1 jaw, it is not recommended.
